North Shore Bike Path/Sunnyside Avenue Drainage Improvements Project

Date:    August 26, 2016

The Village of Libertyville recently contracted with Berger Excavating Contractors, Inc. to complete drainage improvements within the bike path north of your property. This work will include regrading, installation of storm sewer (only in the easterly 1/3rd of the project), removal, relocation and installation of an asphalt bike path, landscape restoration and other associated improvements. The approximate limits of the work begin at Fourth Ave and end approximately 1100ft east. The work will also include installation of a drainage swale to convey storm water from west to east. Portions of this ditch may be within 5-6’ of the fence separating your property from the bike path area. It is of critical importance that the flow of water is not blocked in the future by landscaping, rocks, foot bridges or other items which may impede the flow of rain water.
The intention of these improvements is to reduce the frequency of flooding during minor to moderate rain events. The project will improve drainage but will not completely eliminate the possibility of flooding.

Funding for this project is being provided by three agencies; The Village of Libertyville, Lake County Division of Transportation and by a grant provided by the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission. Plans for the project were developed by Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. and were reviewed and approved by the agencies involved.

As noted above, much of the work will be immediately north of the fence in the rear of your property and just south of the existing bike path. Work of this type inherently creates noise and some dust from construction activities. Many properties have a gate in the fencing leading from rear yards onto the path area. For the duration of the project, all gates should remain closed at all times. Caution tape will be extended across all gates on the path side. Please do not remove the caution tape or enter the construction area. In addition, during construction, the bike path will be closed and pedestrians and cyclists detoured to the sidewalk along the north side of Sunnyside Ave.

Work is expected to begin the week of August 29th and will start with mobilizing equipment, material deliveries, locating of underground utilities, setting up silt fence and other erosion control items, removal of a few small trees, setting up the detour, etc. Excavating activities and the actual closure of the path will likely occur late the week of the 29th or early the following week.
